In recognition of Black History Month, the Museum of Appalachia will present the Fisk Jubilee Singers on February 3, 2012.

The historic a' cappella ensemble, from Fisk University in Nashville, will present an evening concert at 7 p.m. at the Museum for general audiences. The Fisk Jubilee Singers will also present an interactive program for school groups at 12:30 p.m.
A Museum tour is included, giving students the opportunity to see and experience regional history. The appearances are funded in part through a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.
Fisk University, established in 1866, was the first university in the country to offer higher education to men and women irrespective of color. The Fisk Jubilee Singers, formed in 1871, are vocal artists and students who sing and travel worldwide, performing and preserving traditional Negro spirituals. The group has received a Dove award and Grammy nominations, was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000 and was selected as a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artist and patrons of the arts, in 2008.
